2009 Open Hunt

We’re off to a seeded beach hunt on Onset Beach in Onset, MA at Buzzards Bay. The day started cool and cloudy. The drive down was nice as it wasn’t hot. In some spots it seemed as though the day was going to be shrouded in fog. When we got to the beach that all changed, as the sun came out and burned off the clouds and fog. It turned out to be a nice warm sunny day.

The first event of the day was to raffle off a Silver Round. A Silver Round is a coin that is made of .999 Pure Silver. It can be called a Silver Dollar if that is its face value, but it is usually worth more and can be cashed in for the going rate of silver. My Grandson and I purchased an arms length of tickets (approx 20).

Jokingly I told him that if no one responded after they called the first number, then I must be the winner. No one did respond and he looked at his tickets and told me that his number wasn’t high enough and I must have won. I checked my ticket and sure enough I won the first Indian Head silver round. He thought that coin was the greatest thing in the world when he saw it and I couldn’t blame him. It is something special. This round looks like a nickel but is the size of a silver dollar.

A second raffle followed and we bought tickets again. The number was drawn and my Grandson was the winner. He had a choice of a silver round or an 1883 silver dollar that was made into a key chain. He chose the 2003 Silver Round and was as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. He was just thrilled with his winnings, and who could blame him. It was something you just don’t see every day. I didn’t expect to win my coin either, so I was excited as well.

Finally it was time for the hunt. There were three ‘fields’ marked out on the beach. Each field was an hour-long hunt. There would be one hunt in the morning, then a lunch break followed by two more hunts in the afternoon. There were a total of 120 hunters on the beach. The oldest competitor was 84 and the youngest was 12. It was a great day of comradery and competition and everyone was looking forward to next years hunt.

Here are some photos of the event taken by Gordie our club president and my Grandson Jake.
